Laser Hair Removal: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Smooth Skin

25 Sep 2023 | Laser Hair Removal

You’ve come to the right place if you’ve been thinking about having laser hair removal. As you are no doubt aware, there are many factors to take into account, so whether you’re looking for a clinic or thinking about purchasing an at-home gadget, it’s crucial to conduct research beforehand. Here’s our ultimate guide to getting full body smooth hairless skin and what you should know before undergoing laser therapy.

What exactly is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive technique for getting rid of undesirable body hair, which means no skin incisions are necessary, reducing the amount of recovery time. Any area of the body may be given this treatment, however the most popular places are the face, underarms, bikini area, or any area where pubic hair grows, back, and legs.

A method known as selective photothermolysis is used in laser hair removal. Cells with a lot of pigment (color) are destroyed by the heat produced by lasers. It works by transferring the heat from the laser to the hair follicles and destroying them so that they are “dead”. For the process to be super effective, it is advisable to get hair removal laser treatment when they are at a “baby” form, or in the growth stage. Most patients require a number of laser treatments.

Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal

Usually, light skin with dark hair shows the best result. It is often believed that the smoothest results can only be achieved when a person has a light complexion and dark hair. However, electrolysis is effective on all skin and hair types. While electrolysis involves more and longer sessions, with full results visible in closer to 18 months, those results endure longer and require fewer touch-ups, unlike laser hair removal, which achieves full results in just a few months. This is due to the fact that laser hair removal gradually slows and thins hair growth, whereas electrolysis actually prevents hair growth.

Electrolysis is more painful than laser hair removal. When compared to a bee sting, it feels like a rubber-band snap, and some of the most recent laser hair removal systems are even less painful. Larger areas, including the back and legs, can be treated with laser hair removal at once. If you have a few stray hairs on your chin, upper lip, or eyebrows, electrolysis allows an electrologist to poke and target those specific hair follicles.

11 Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can offer a plethora of benefits, both physically and mentally. What are my top 11 advantages? Here’s my personal favorites.

1. A long-term fix

Most people get laser hair removal to have a long-lasting and permanent hairless result. Do note that at some point after the treatment, you may still need to go for  a touch-up treatment a few months or years down the road. It is still one of my best long-term fixes available. You will at the very least experience a long-term reduction in hair growth that gets easier with time.

2. Low upkeep

Anyone looking for a long-term hair removal solution should consider investing in laser hair removal. Yes, of course yearly touch-ups are advised, but compared to the amount of time you use for shaving, having a maximum 30 mins laser hair removal treatment is way better. It’s economical because it’s a long-term solution. Since you won’t need to spend money on monthly waxes or replacement razor blades, you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the course of your lifetime.

3. Few side effects

With improvements in laser treatments, the severity and quantity of adverse effects have decreased while also becoming less painful and more effective. The most common side effect is redness at the follicle level, which – worry not, only lasts 24–48 hours after the treatment. So don’t worry, they won’t hurt!

4. Quick

Laser hair removal is by far the fastest way to “zap” away body hair. And hey, that is no bluff! In fact, many aestheticians recommend the same thing for their clients, especially when they’re looking for a rapid fix. Sessions for laser hair removal are fast. Believe it or not,  lips, underarms, and bikinis require only 15 minutes of treatment, and bigger regions only take a maximum of 2 hours!

5. Eliminating ingrown hairs

Do you always see tiny bumps after you shave? Well, that is called ingrown hairs. If ingrown hairs always make you feel itchy, then laser hair removal is a great alternative. Since lasers destroy the hair strands on their follicle level, you won’t ever have to worry about hairs growing back into the body. So, with lasers, you should never worry about having inflamed acne on the skin.

6. Pain-free

Contrary to popular belief, laser hair removal is considerably much less painful than other procedures. Trust me, though the word “laser” sounds a bit jarring, most of Dr. Abby Clinic’s clients compare the sensation to a rubber band being snapped on the skin, and they say it’s totally bearable! I wouldn’t say it’s totally pain-free, but if I can give it to a scale, I’d rate the pain level 1 out of 5.

7. Safe and secured

Though previously I have mentioned that hair removal lasers work best on light skin with dark hairs, thanks to the advancement of technology, the hair removal lasers used in Dr. Abby Clinic can deliver the same result to people with dark skin tones too. So, don’t worry! If you have any concern regarding the effectiveness of the treatment, let’s book a session and we’ll analyze your skin.

8. Accurate treatment

Laser hair removal, in my personal opinion, is the best option for people who want to get rid of hair at a specific area of the body. Some people are okay with arm hairs, but don’t like the look of leg hairs. Some people love thick eyebrows, but some people don’t. Well, this makes it a superb choice because you can choose to remove a little patch of hair from the lip area, the brows, or larger areas like calves.

9. Encourages smooth hairless skin

If you always get acne or pimples or areas you always shave, it might mean that your skin is actually inflamed because of the sharp razor used when shaving. Laser hair removal procedures, believe it or not, can also lessen the severity of acne breakouts due to ingrown hair. Additionally, it helps to enhance skin tone, texture and pigmentations. Your skin will feel much silkier and softer after laser hair removal. This process also helps to tone your muscles while increasing the appearance of your skin.

10. Convenient & accessible

Laser hair removal helps you save a ton of time that would otherwise be used for grooming. You won’t be surprised to learn that a lot of women, as well as men, spend a lot of time getting rid of unwanted hair. When you don’t need to regularly remove undesirable hair from your body, you could see that you have more time for daily tasks like doing your hair and makeup or taking a little sleep before going out.

11. Less body smell

The strand of hair deep inside the follicle, which odor-causing bacteria like to cling to, is no longer available for the bacteria to hide on as the laser treatment destroys follicles at the root, according to several clients who have experienced a decrease in body odor.

Can everyone get Laser Hair Removal?

Anyone who has excessive body hair can have it removed with lasers. However, if you’re one of the following, you should avoid getting laser hair removal (or at least consult your doctor first):

  • a pregnant woman.
  • are using certain drugs, such as treatments for acne.
  • a scar that is elevated or keloided.
  • possess skin cancer or have had it.
  • are prone to cold sores or have genital herpes (HSV-2).

How to get ready for Laser Hair Removal

There is more to laser hair removal than simply “zapping” undesirable hair. It is still considered as a medical operation that still brings in some risks and requires professional assistance. If you want to get rid of your hair with laser therapy, you should:

1. Wait six weeks before electrolysis, waxing, or plucking.

The reason for this is so that the laser used can focus on the hair roots or follicles that typically waxing or plucking have invasively removed temporarily.

2. You should also limit your time in the sun for six weeks both before and after therapy.

The UV light that comes from the sun exposure can potentially reduce and disturbs the effectiveness of laser hair removal. Apart from that, the hash UV radiation can also cause further inflammation to the skin, which increases the likelihood of side effects.

3. Avoid using any blood thinners before the operation.

If you take aspirin frequently or are taking any anti-inflammatories, talk to your doctor about which medications you should stop taking.

How Laser Hair Removal works and what to expect

During laser hair removal, what happens?

This is how the session usually goes. Prior to the treatment, the focused area that is going to be “zapped” will be thoroughly cleaned. After that, some clients will get a numbing gel applied, depending on the sensitivity of the area. Typically, we leave the numbing gel to do its job between 30 and 60 minutes so that our clients will always have a pleasant experience throughout the treatment. Clients will be taken to a room designed exclusively for laser treatment.

When it’s time to laser, we use a machine to vaporize the hair. By vaporizing it, a laser eliminates hair. Since the laser is heat, please anticipate the small smoke smell. This means that the lasers are “burning” the hair follicles effectively. Depending on the size of the region being treated, your session may take as quick as 5 minutes to a maximum of 1 hour.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Following the operation, some redness and swelling are possible along with brief discomfort. People claim that laser hair removal is less painful than other hair removal techniques like waxing or threading, likening it to a warm pinprick.

After having laser hair removal, what should I do?

We always advise our clients to use sunblock or sunscreen to prevent any side effects. Following laser hair removal, you ought to avoid letting treated skin come into contact with direct sunlight, use no sunlamps, tanning beds, or other indoor tanning devices, follow the aftercare advice provided by your dermatologist to reduce and soothe redness and swelling.

Does Laser Hair Removal require downtime?

In general, there is no substantial downtime needed for laser hair removal. Your treated skin will be red and puffy right away following laser hair removal. However, the redness and puffiness are not severe enough to prevent you from resuming your regular activities.

When can I expect to see the effects of my Laser Hair Removal?

Results are probably visible right away after treatment. Depending on the patient, the outcomes can differ. The results are influenced by your skin color, hair color, region treated, type of laser utilized, and thickness and color of your hair. After the initial treatment, you should see a 10% to 25% reduction in hair growth

Most patients typically require 2 to 6 laser treatments to permanently remove their hair. On the get go after the treatment, you won’t see any hair on the treated area. In fact, this result should continue for as long as several months. After that, less hair usually grows back, and when it does, they are often thin, fine and weak, not as thick and dark as before.

How long will Laser Hair Removal’s effects last?

Most people experience months or even years without growing hair. Even after the hair grows back, they won’t be as noticeable. They’re often finer, lighter and weaker. In order to permanently remove the body hair, a follow-up laser treatment is required.

When is it okay to get a second Hair Removal Laser treatment?

Patient to patient, this varies. Several laser sessions are frequently necessary to remove hair. Typically, we recommend our clients to book for a hair laser removal treatment once every four to six weeks. However, it depends on the person themselves. Usually, our aestheticians will provide a post-treatment consultation so that clients are always informed on when to book for a new treatment, and what the aftercare suggested to get the best and long-lasting result.
