Top 4 Do’s and Dont’s! – Dr. Abby’s SECRET Methods in Treating Bad Acne Scars

10 Jun 2022 | Acne Treatment

Have trouble getting rid of acne scars? These solutions will help you regain your confidence!

Believe it or not, dealing with severe acne scarring is more normal than you think! A Clinical Aesthetic Dermatology study found that acne vulgaris affects up to 80 percent of people ages 11–30 who suffer from acne scarring, and 1 in 5 of those who get acne also get acne scarring.

Active breakouts can be frustrating, but the scars acne can leave behind can be even more annoying! The good news is that acne scars can be treated and healed. But, before treatment can start, you have to get rid of any first!

So what are the do’s and don’ts to treat acne and acne marks? Here’s the list…

Do’s #1: Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are often found in products and skincare made to treat acne. They are proven to help remove dead skin and prevent clogged pores, which eventually helps acne heal faster and reduces future breakouts. Even better, AHAs with regular use can also help make acne scars appear less noticeable. The mild acid exfoliates the outer layer of the skin to help remove discoloration and rough skin. Best for all skin types.

Don’t’: Too much AHA!

AHA is meant to be used occasionally (2-3 times a week) depending on the concentration of the active ingredients. Using too much can lead to severe sensitivity and disruption of the skin barrier. This can cause more danger to the skin, such as deep tissue scarring.

Do’s #2: Retinoids

Topical retinoids are another amazing acne treatment option with scar-smoothing benefits. The said Active speeds up skin cell regeneration and improves skin texture. Retinoids can also help reduce discoloration and make scars less noticeable. You can find creams and serums with retinoids over the counter, but healthcare professionals can prescribe higher concentrations. Best for atrophic or depressed scars.

Don’t: Use retinoids solo under direct sunlight!

Though retinoids are amazing, they can also make your skin sensitive to the sun. Remember to always wear sunscreen daily when using anything that contains retinoids.

Do’s #3: Laser resurfacing

Laser resurfacing removes the top layer of the skin. This treatment typically has a faster healing time than other resurfacing treatments. However, laser treatments have their own unique downtime period. Though results may be better than topical skincare, always remember to abide by aestheticians’ post-treatment care instructions and the downtime period. Best for all acne scars and lighter skin tones

Don’t: Direct sunlight before downtime ends.

You have to keep in mind that after laser treatments, skin can peel and become extra sensitive. If needed, you should keep the area covered with a bandage until it’s completely healed, or avoid direct sunlight at your best.

Do’s #4: Microneedling

This newer treatment uses a small, handheld, needle-studded roller or a handheld ‘pen’ on the surface of the scars. The needles puncture the numbed skin and allow the skin to heal, making it the best natural collagen induction therapy. There is evidence that suggests microneedling helps reduce the depth of acne scars. Still, this treatment can take up to 9 months to see dramatic changes. Best for depressed acne scars.

Don’t: Self DIY Microneedling.

Please do not be tempted to try the ‘easy and safe’ at-home microneedling kit! Even if they are, your application, pressure, post-treatment care, and sanitization are not similar to professionals. As the treatment goes on, it punctures the skin to allow collagen production. But if there are bacteria on the device, wouldn’t it go straight into your skin?
